Stillness Breathes – Art Exhibition by Jenny Fox
November 6 @ 1:30 pm - November 17 @ 5:30 pm
Jenny was born in Alberta, Canada and brought up in Co. Mayo, and now lives and works in Co. Tipperary. A graduate of NCAD, her work is represented in several public as well as private collections both at home and abroad. Most recently, Jenny was hosted by the 2017 Terryglass Arts Festival as its first Artist in Residence. Much of her inspiration comes from growing up in rural Ireland.
The theme of her work centres on the feeling of belonging, the notions of physical space and place.
According to Jenny the space and light of open land and seascapes has forced her to regard her own place within them, always creating a feeling of being very small in the wide open expanse. Sometimes this simple and common-place experience is elevated beyond the ordinary, the simple acts of being and of stillness transform to abstract resplendence – everything is connected and perfect.
With her most recent work, including for this exhibition, she has tried to catch those little moments of perfection. Her paintings capture the sense of quiet joy and contentment within an empty place, where the horizons seem endless. She is not trying to paint these places rather the expression of how she experiences them.
She paints using oil applied on canvas built up with plaster in which she has made pre-planned marks, she cuts, scratches and etches into the plaster and then creates thin layers of colour and texture by applying, scratching back and re-applying paint, gradually building a richness of depth.
With all her work she seeks to have an interplay with subject, composition and technique, to produce work which is restrained yet airy. She wants to combine subtle gestures in material, light and tone to form carefully planned minimal planes.
Jenny’s exhibition will be on display in the foyer of Cultúrlann Sweeney from the 6th November – 17th November during library opening hours listed below.
